University of Bath Visit: 13th June 2016
Marlwood Year 12 students visited the University of Bath on the 13th June as part of a three day Post 18 Options Programme. The day included a tour of the campus university and international renowned sports village, discussions with Higher Education advisors, help and guidance in choosing a university and course and also the opportunity to quiz undergraduate student ambassadors on university life.
In addition to the UoB visit during the three days' programme Year 12 students also had workshops with UWE HE advisors and Marlwood's Career Service in regards to HE, Apprenticeships, training opportunities and career pathways; they were introduced to UCAS and started their personal statements and met with several guests including Aldi's Regional Manager and apprentices, an apprentice from Deloitte Financial Services and several former Marlwood 6th Form students who have gone on to university and employment.

Year 13 End of Year Arrangements Including the Final Assembly
As Year 13s' time draws towards a tearful close please be aware that we have arranged a number of celebratory events to mark their time at Marlwood School. In addition to the Leavers' Assembly we are also inviting Year 13 students to the annual Founders' Day Service, at St. Marys Church, Thornbury and the Valedictory Dinner - both on the 28th June.

Halo Film Website Design Opportunity
Halo Films, are seeking support for the design and production of several websites. The company are involved with training cyclists and producing films.
The focus would be cycling web sites, with the company looking to produce semi professional designs including new logos and changes to page structure. Any 6th formers who are competent with Wordpress and would like to earn a small amount of money, whilst gaining great web design experience, please contact Mr Davies.

The Royal University Hospital, Bath, are advertising a three day
event, which provides a great opportunity for anyone seeking a
potential career in medicine or as a health care professional. All interested
students need to apply directly to RUH Bath (see Mr Davies for details) and there is a
cost of £80 for the 3 day course, which includes lunch and refreshments. The 3
day programme will deliver an excellent insight to the world of health care and
provide a unique experience for those involved. It will also provide a very
positive addition to UCAS Personal Statement applications and CVs.
Please can we also take this
opportunity to remind all parents, carers and students of the Medical
Profession Career Assembly, to be held on Monday 21st March, in the
drama hall. As previously advertise on the Marlwood 6th Blog and by email, the fortnightly career assemblies focus on different job
sectors and career pathways. The Medical Profession assembly will be led by Simon Atkinson, Senior Lecturer in Medicine,
University of Bristol Medical School from 8.40am to 9.10am and provide details
on careers within the medical profession and also qualification requirements.
The signup sheets for this and every career assembly are available on the 6th
Form Career noticeboard, 6th form foyer and the career notice board
in the school’s main corridor.

looks at how we think, how we can make healthy choices through our food,
exercise and sleep and how a positive mindset can improve our confidence as
well as reduce stress.
The six weeks course starts on Wednesday 23rd March in R1, the 6th Form Centre and then will continue for the first 5 weeks of Term 5, running on Thursday lunchtimes in R1.

Curriculum Focus Day - Wednesday 9th March
All 6th form students will take part in this
collapsed timetable Focus Day on the theme of Employability Skills. UWE Pre-HE
Careers will deliver the first workshop to the whole group, then after
break the 6th form will be divided into 3 groups and attend a carousel of 3
workshops that are delivered by SGS Schools’ Careers Advisors.

On Friday 5th February Marlwood 6th form provided all
students with the opportunity to attend a range of activities and work shops to
support them with the crucial decisions of what they do after year 13. Members
of the SGS Careers Service advised students on post 18 options, careers, higher
education, further training, apprenticeships and Gap years. Those students
involved found the interactive sessions extremely helpful and beneficial in
shaping their next steps.

This is most likely to suit a Y11 or Post 16 student who
is looking for an alternative to either A Levels or University. This position
requires creativity and a precise working method. The job will be under
supervision of our current Artwork Technician, whilst working to fixed
timescales, often under pressure.
This is a lot to ask from a young person, but we are
confident that they do exist. We are looking for somebody to start URGENTLY,
but, they need to have the right stuff! We can offer a trial day initially
following interview selection before making a final offer. The length of
Apprenticeship is minimally 1 year and subject to other factors, which may
include college and/or other training requirements to be discussed.
Careers, Guidance and Advice
On the 5th February we will be holding a careers,
guidance and advice morning to support all year 12 and 13 students as they
consider their post 18 options. The morning will include 3 sessions focusing on:
Session
1: Post-18 Options: A Presentation Explaining Pathways at 18.
(Focus Group: All of Y12 and
Y13)
Aim:
All students to gain a better understanding of all routes
available to them and possible advantages and disadvantages of each option.
Session
2: Careers Exploration
(Focus Group: All of Y12 and Y13)
Aims:
i) To understand what skills and
qualities are needed for progression into work or higher education and to be
able to identify skills and qualities within ourselves.
ii) To be able to use a range of resources to research employment
sectors and to generate ideas about their future.
Session 3: Alternatives to University
(Focus Group: All of Y12 and Y13 not applying to University (or seeking an
alternative))
Aims:
To enable students to consider the
range of options available to them if they do not want to go to University, and
to be able to use tools to research opportunities, including:
Apprenticeships and Traineeships,
Gap Year, Sponsored degrees / School Leaver Programmes, Other Education
(includes College Higher Education, College Further Education, distance learning,
part-time learning) and Employment.
Students will present back on a
'live' opportunity.
Please note normal lessons will be collapsed
on the morning of the 5th February to enable all students to participate
and gain from this invaluable opportunity. Also, for those Y12 students focused
on Higher Education, there are additional HE research sessions arranged for the
Curriculum Focus Day (9th March). These will include a 'Why
Go/Employability Benefits of HE' talk from the University of the West of
England.

We will shortly be sending a letter home to all Year 12 students regarding two events during term 3 - The Ambitions Event, held at the Wise campus, Filton on Tuesday 16th February and also the UCAS Higher Education Exhibitions, held at the University of the West of England on Monday 14th March. In the meantime please can all Year 12 students click on the UCAS website link below where they can book into the UCAS exhibition independently. Once you have registered and requested a ticket you will receive an email link to an E-Ticket for the event. Please print this off and hand into Mrs Jefferies in the Post 16 Office so that all student tickets can be centrally tracked and managed:
